DEAL OR NO DEAL

Has Israel Forgotten About the Gaza Threat?

A withdrawal from Gaza without demilitarizing the Strip and disarming Hamas will be a historic mistake

Reports of significant progress in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the Gaza Peace Council, regarding the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement are sparking protest and concern in Israel.

The possibility of withdrawing from the Strip without demilitarization and without disarming Hamas raises fears that Israel has become indifferent to the threat closest to its borders.

A quick review of Israeli news reports in recent weeks might give international readers the impression that Israel is facing only two main enemies: Hezbollah and Iran.

But the truth is that Israel has a much closer enemy, located right within the territory, actively using international diplomatic channels to ensure its survival and future: Hamas. This is the same heinous terrorist organization that shocked the world with the October 7th massacre.

Now, like a pig displaying its hooves to deceive others into thinking it is kosher, Hamas presents itself to the world as ready for long term agreements, but under completely different terms than those Israel has demanded since the ceasefire took effect.

The disturbing possibility that the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, might cave to international pressure spearheaded by President Donald Trump and the Peace Council, whose decisions Israel is forced to merely observe from the sidelines, has united voices from both sides of the Israeli political map.

"Otzma Yehudit" Chairman Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stated in response to the emerging second phase between Israel and Hamas: "With a devil that has engraved our destruction on its flag, you do not commit to stopping the elimination of terrorists, and you do not sign deals, not through a third party, not through mediators, and not through any other entity".

Ben Gvir added that after the October 7th massacre, Prime Minister Netanyahu must clarify even to our best friends that the only solution in Gaza Israel is willing to partner in is encouraging emigration and destroying Hamas, and that there is no other solution.

From across the political map, opposition member and "Israel Beiteinu" Chairman Avigdor Lieberman echoed Ben Gvir's sentiments, saying: "Any agreement with Hamas is a return to the exact same misconception that led the State of Israel to the October 7 massacre. Instead of reaching agreements with Hamas, we must destroy Hamas".

The second phase of the ceasefire agreement has not yet been signed. However, the possibility that Israel might withdraw from the Gaza Strip before Hamas is disarmed and the area becomes a demilitarized zone under international control is raising renewed alarm in Israel.

It fuels the fear that Prime Minister Netanyahu is looking too far abroad and forgetting the immediate security threat right beyond the perimeter fence.
