Armed members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards have taken control of a vessel loaded with hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil near the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports from Iranian and Arab media outlets. At least 11 foreign nationals who were aboard the ship have been detained by Iranian forces.
Iranian media characterized the operation as taking place in the northern section of the Persian Gulf. Authorities described the seized vessel as engaged in "fuel smuggling" and said it had failed to comply with instructions from the Revolutionary Guards.
Fast boats carrying armed personnel approached the ship, which was transporting approximately 400,000 liters of fuel. The forces boarded the vessel and took the crew into custody.
