Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a travel advisory Wednesday for Israeli travelers in Ecuador, following extreme weather events in the South American country.
Ecuadorian authorities have declared a red alert across the entire country in response to the development and forecasts of the El Niño phenomenon, instructing local authorities to strengthen preparedness and response to extreme weather events, the ministry said. El Niño is a climate phenomenon caused by abnormal warming of ocean waters, affecting rainfall patterns, temperatures and wind conditions. In Ecuador, it can bring heavy rains, flooding, rising river levels and landslides in certain areas, alongside drought and heat conditions in others.
"Israelis staying in Ecuador are asked to exercise caution, stay updated on local authorities' instructions, and avoid staying or traveling in areas prone to flooding, landslides and water flows," the Foreign Ministry warned. "It is recommended to avoid crossing rivers, streams or flooded roads, even if water levels appear low."
