An Israeli citizen has died in a Peruvian prison where he had been incarcerated for approximately three and a half years. Daniel Amuna, 62, a resident of Petah Tikva, was found dead in his cell on Sunday under circumstances that remain unclear.

Amuna was arrested in January 2023 at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima after narcotics were discovered in his luggage. According to Israeli media reports, he was found dead in prison this past Sunday after spending more than three years in detention.

ZAKA is now coordinating with the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the deceased's family, and Peruvian authorities to arrange the necessary procedures for repatriating his body to Israel for burial.

Yossi Landau, ZAKA commander for the Lachish region, stated: "We are accompanying the family members and working with local authorities to arrange all the necessary procedures. We will do everything possible to return his coffin to Israel as soon as possible and bring him to burial with proper dignity."
