An unbelievable story

Library Book Returned After 150 Years

Renovation workers discovered a rare Book on ancient Greece sealed inside a fireplace wall but library waives astronomical late fee due to records issue

The Story of a Greek-Australian Book

Public libraries are accustomed to forgetful patrons who return books a week or two late, but a recent discovery at an Australian library has shattered all records:

A vintage book about ancient Greece has been returned after a "brief absence" of nearly 150 years!

The rare book was uncovered by construction workers during home renovations, where it had been sealed inside the brick wall of an old fireplace and forgotten for more than a century.

A Fine Worth More Than the Book

Despite suffering minor damage from water seepage and temperature fluctuations over the past century and a half, the text remained largely legible when discovered.

Had the library enforced its standard late-return policy, the accumulated fine would have reached approximately 28,000 Australian dollars, equivalent to about 19,500 US dollars, a sum that would financially devastate most individuals.

A Happy Ending

Public libraries typically don't forgive overdue materials easily, but this case proved exceptional.

Rather than imposing the tens of thousands of dollars in accumulated penalties on the family who found the book, Australian library administrators announced they would waive the astronomical fine, citing a technical issue with historical records from that era.

The lost scroll on ancient Greece has now been placed on display at the local Australian library as a rare museum piece, as a reminder that in the end, every book finds it's way home.
