NYC Mayor Mamdani Still Without Security Clearance

Nine months after taking office as mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani still has not received federal security clearance. The ongoing delay restricts the mayor's ability to receive briefings on classified information relating to terror threats and complex security risks facing the city.

According to a New York Post report, the lack of access to such intelligence could hamper the city administration's response during a national or mass emergency. The situation has become particularly sensitive as the 81st session of the UN General Assembly opens in New York, an event that brings world leaders and diplomats from across the globe and requires the highest level of security coordination.

At a press conference held at City Hall, Mayor Mamdani attempted to downplay concerns and reassure the public. He stated that the timeline is typical and standard for this type of clearance, emphasizing that the process for obtaining federal security clearance is currently underway.

Mamdani added that a number of senior officials in his administration already hold the necessary security clearance, and that the New York Police Department regularly briefs him on intelligence investigations and security matters that do not involve federally classified information.

The security clearance issue for New York City's mayor is not unprecedented in the city's history. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio also remained without appropriate clearance for a similar period after failing to submit the application at the start of his term, and his vetting process took just over a year before approval.

Former Mayor Eric Adams had his security clearance revoked following the federal indictment filed against him. Sources familiar with the details note that the extensive background checks and screenings conducted by the FBI can take up to two years, particularly for new figures in public office.

Mamdani, who took office in January, has faced sharp criticism from Jewish leaders and activists over his harsh statements against Israel and his call for residents to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his expected visit to the UN General Assembly.

In recent months, the mayor has confronted a sharp rise in antisemitic hate crimes in the city, with more than half of all verified hate crimes in New York directed against Jews. As a result, he announced a significant increase in security around synagogues and Jewish institutions ahead of the High Holidays.
