Sharon Prison Incident

Elite Unit Rescues Barricaded Inmate

An inmate who had harmed himself barricaded on a balcony at Sharon Prison with a rope around his neck, prompting deployment of Israel Prison Service's elite Masada Unit

Drama at Sharon jail

A tense standoff unfolded Wednesday at Sharon Prison when an inmate barricaded himself on a wing balcony.

According to reports received by the Masada Unit, the Israel Prison Service's elite tactical team, the prisoner had lost blood from self-inflicted injuries, tied a rope around his neck, and began threatening to take his own life.

The Masada Unit is the Israel Prison Service's operational arm, specializing in handling exceptional incidents and emergency situations at detention facilities. Personnel undergo specialized training for crisis management, including situations where inmates threaten suicide or endanger themselves.

The unit was immediately dispatched to the scene. Forces worked in coordination with the prison's regular security staff while deploying a specialized negotiation team from the elite unit. The negotiators attempted to establish contact with the inmate and de-escalate the crisis.

Following a tense tactical operation, security forces successfully removed the inmate from the balcony. He was taken for continued medical treatment for the injuries he had inflicted on himself during the incident.

A spokesperson for the Israel Prison Service stated that "the unit's readiness stands at all times for intensive operational activity inside and outside prisons." The incident joins a series of recent operational actions carried out by the prison service.

In recent weeks, the Israel Prison Service has conducted heightened activity at detention facilities, including raids on inmates identified with criminal organizations and enforcement operations against individuals under electronic monitoring. During these operations, authorities have seized drugs, improvised weapons, and prescription medications.
