Qatar is engaged in quiet mediation with Iran aimed at securing the release of detained members of the country's Jewish community, according to a report by Israel's Kan News, in a move officials say is driven as much by strategic calculation as by humanitarian concern.
Sources familiar with the negotiations told Kan correspondent Roi Kais that Qatar has been in direct contact with senior Iranian officials to press for the detainees' release. Doha reportedly hopes that a successful outcome will be viewed favorably in Washington and help cement its role as the Trump administration's preferred channel into Tehran.
The effort follows a wave of arrests inside Iran's Jewish community, home to the largest Jewish population in the Middle East outside Israel, numbering in the tens of thousands despite decades of hostility between Tehran and Jerusalem. Several community members were detained after allegedly criticizing the regime during the recent military confrontation between Iran, Israel, and the United States. According to the report, five Jews were arrested on those grounds, in addition to two American Jews detained in July 2025 on suspicion of ties to Israel, at which point an additional 33 members of Iran's Jewish community were also taken into custody. One of the American detainees, an Iranian-American resident of Los Angeles, was later released on bail.
Kan also reported that Qatar is pursuing a parallel track working to secure the release of American citizens held in Iran. The mediation comes on the heels of Tehran's release of an American citizen who had been detained since 2024, a move President Donald Trump publicly welcomed at the time.
Officials briefed on the matter say Qatar's involvement is not purely humanitarian, describing it instead as an effort by Doha to reinforce its position as Washington's preferred intermediary in the region by demonstrating its ability to broker sensitive negotiations with Tehran, even as Qatar itself came under Iranian attack during the recent fighting.
Neither Qatari nor Iranian officials have publicly confirmed the mediation effort.
