Israel Council Corruption: Head Arrested in Bribery Probe

Israeli police arrested a serving head of a local council in southern Israel on Monday morning, along with several family members and senior municipal officials, on suspicion of multiple corruption offenses including bribery, tender manipulation, and fraud.

Lahav 433, Israel's national anti-corruption unit, detained seven suspects in total and brought in six additional individuals for questioning. At the same time, police forces raided the local authority's offices and searched the premises.

The arrests follow an undercover investigation conducted over recent months by Lahav 433's tender task force, working in coordination with the Southern District police. According to investigators, those involved allegedly manipulated public tenders and committed fraud and breach of trust offenses.

Authorities are also examining allegations that employees were placed on the council's payroll in fictitious positions, as part of an alleged scheme to siphon public funds from the municipal budget into the pockets of the suspects.

The operation involved significant police and Border Police forces, including units from Lahav 433, the Southern District, special patrol units, the National Guard, the Tactical Division, and the Gideonim 33 unit.

The investigation is being conducted in partnership with the Israel Tax Authority and the Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority, under the supervision of the State Attorney's Office Economic Division. The suspects are expected to appear later Monday at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court, where police will request extensions of their detention based on investigative needs.

Police officials stated that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat crime in the Bedouin sector in the Negev region. They claimed that criminal elements are attempting to turn local authorities into "crime strongholds and platforms for criminal activity."
