Caesarea Mafia Killing: Suspect Arrested in Hadera Raid

New details have emerged about the arrest of the main suspect in the killing of Caucasian mafia leader Yanis Yushbayev, who was shot dead outside a restaurant at a gas station near Caesarea on Sunday. The suspect was apprehended in a ground-floor warehouse within a residential building in central Hadera, following a dramatic operation by Israel's Central Special Unit (known by its Hebrew acronym Yamam), according to a report published Wednesday by Israeli news site Walla.

The arrest in the heart of a populated neighborhood sparked considerable alarm among local residents and business owners, who had no idea that a suspect in a complex murder case with an extensive criminal record was hiding in their midst.

Eyewitness accounts from neighbors and bystanders present during the police operation paint a picture of nerve-wracking drama that unfolded in broad daylight. Around five o'clock in the afternoon, four commercial vehicles arrived at the location and approximately 15 armed Yamam operatives emerged, masked and in uniform, according to the Walla report.

The operatives quickly breached the warehouse, forced the suspect to the ground, bound his hands and feet, and covered his eyes. Immediately afterward, about 20 detectives descended on the scene, conducting a thorough search of the warehouse and adjacent yard while collecting various pieces of evidence.

Local residents, suddenly confronted with the massive security-police presence and the sounds of forced entry, told Walla that in those moments they were certain they were witnessing a security incident involving terrorist infiltration and a hostage situation. Only afterward did they realize it was the capture of a murder suspect.

The dramatic assassination took place Sunday outside a restaurant at a gas station complex near Caesarea. Yushbayev had arrived for a planned meeting, and as he walked toward his vehicle, an assailant lying in wait near the entrance door shot him at point-blank range.

Emergency medical teams performed resuscitation efforts on Yushbayev and evacuated him in critical condition to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, where doctors were forced to pronounce him dead. As previously reported, a former senior law enforcement official who analyzed footage of the incident assessed that the killing was carried out by a highly professional assassin, possibly even a hired gun from abroad.

Yushbayev was considered one of the central figures in the criminal underworld in the Hadera area and headed the Caucasian mafia. Over the years, his name has been linked to a long series of criminal cases and violent conflicts.

Among other incidents, his name surfaced in 2015 in connection with the murder investigation of released prisoner Elchin Abshayev, as someone suspected of dispatching the killers. Two years later, Abshayev's brother took revenge and shot Yushbayev during a mourning gathering, seriously wounding him; the shooter was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

The bloody feud between the parties continued to mark the regional crime map for more than a decade, culminating in Yushbayev's assassination in Caesarea and the arrest of the suspect in the Hadera warehouse.
