Israeli Missing in Tibet-Nepal Flooding: 384 Unaccounted

Israeli authorities are investigating reports that an Israeli citizen has gone missing in Tibet following a catastrophic natural disaster that struck the border region between Chinese-controlled Tibet and Nepal. According to reports from India, an Israeli is among the tourists unaccounted for in the flash flooding, and Israel's Foreign Ministry and emergency response systems are examining information about an Israeli who disappeared in the area and may be trapped in the disaster zone.

The disaster occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time near the Bhote Koshi River, when a dramatic collapse of a mountainside into the river caused water levels to surge suddenly and dramatically, sending massive quantities of water and mud cascading toward nearby settlements. Initial reports indicate that between four and five villages were completely destroyed and buried beneath heavy layers of mud.

According to incoming data, at least 384 tourists and travelers are currently listed as missing, and eight people have been confirmed dead. Approximately 28 buses have also disappeared in the disaster area. At this stage, the identities and nationalities of most of those missing remain unknown, though those unaccounted for include citizens of Nepal, India, Britain, South Africa, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Nepal's government has declared a state of emergency and is conducting extensive rescue operations using helicopters, security forces, and local residents. The cabinet convened an emergency session to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, government and military hospitals in the capital Kathmandu have cleared special areas to receive casualties from the region.

The dramatic rise in water levels swept away police stations, customs offices, and private homes. Emergency authorities issued urgent warnings to communities downstream as far as Chitwan District, which borders India, amid concerns about continued rising water levels and danger to additional areas. Chitwan District is a highly popular tourist destination among Israeli travelers.

In light of developments and the immediate risk, Israel's Foreign Ministry issued an urgent warning to Israelis in these areas to immediately distance themselves from danger zones and flood paths. Nepal's Tourism Board stated that authorities are "working to verify the location and safety status of tourists and travelers who were in or passed through the affected areas."

Teams from ZAKA's international unit are currently in continuous contact with the Israeli embassy in Nepal, as well as with local sources in Nepal and Tibet, to closely monitor reports of missing persons. ZAKA's deputy director of operations, Chaim Wingarten, noted that the organization's command center received the report about the Israeli missing in the Tibet area and that the organization is prepared to assist as needed in full coordination with the Foreign Ministry.

ZAKA officials emphasize that because this is an evolving incident in areas with difficult access, the data is preliminary only and may change as additional information is gathered from the field. Given that flooding continues and access to parts of the disaster zone is almost completely blocked, rescue teams estimate that the number of casualties and missing persons is likely to rise as additional areas become accessible.
