Burglary on the Holiest Night

Thief Strikes Yeshiva During Yom Kippur

Students at Tiferet HaLevi Yeshiva returned from Kol Nidrei to find their dormitory rooms ransacked and large sums of cash stolen, including funds collected for all-night Shabbat study sessions.

Thief Breaks Into Elad Yeshiva During Yom Kippur Prayers, Steals Thousands

At Tiferet HaLevi Yeshiva in Elad, students returned from Kol Nidrei services to discover that a thief had exploited the holiest hours of the year to burglarize their dormitory.

The students were shocked to find every light in the dormitory on, a clear sign that an intruder had been moving through the building while they were in prayer. As they checked their rooms, the full scope of the theft became apparent.

The burglar had systematically worked his way through the dormitory while the entire student body was in the beit midrash. He stole varying amounts of cash from different rooms, 1,600 shekels here, 2,000 there, along with smaller sums of 100 and 150 shekels from other students.

The most painful loss was 3,000 shekels that students had spent the eve of Yom Kippur collecting at mikvaot around the city. The money was earmarked to fund "retzufot", the yeshiva tradition of continuous all-night Torah study sessions during long Shabbat nights.

Tiferet HaLevi is one of the largest yeshivot in Elad, with hundreds of students.
