Houthis Down Saudi F-15 in Yemen

The Houthis claim that they successfully downed a Saudi F-15 fighter jet using a surface-to-air missile, on September 16 in Yemen's Marib province.

Footage released by the Houthis shows aircraft wreckage, including a tail section bearing Saudi markings. Defense research firm Janes identified the aircraft as an F-15SA, the advanced Saudi variant of the fighter jet.

The Houthis claimed the aircraft was brought down by a "locally manufactured" surface-to-air missile, though they did not specify which missile was fired. According to their account, additional F-15s and Typhoon jets arrived in the area after the shootdown to locate the wreckage, and these too were driven off. That latter claim has not been independently verified.

CNN also refrained from definitively confirming the shootdown. The network could not independently verify the video, but its military analyst Cedric Leighton said the footage appeared credible and the markings matched a Saudi aircraft. Retired Admiral James Stavridis added that if this is indeed a shootdown, it may indicate an evolution in Houthi capabilities.

The War Zone noted that the footage appears to show infrared sensors and thermal observation systems, which have already been identified in Houthi air defense arrays. These systems can track aircraft passively, without activating radar, making it harder for pilots to detect they are being tracked.

According to Janes, if the shootdown is confirmed, this would be the first combat loss of a Saudi F-15SA "Advanced Eagle" fighter jet. Features visible in the footage match the advanced Saudi variant.

Air defense expert Daniel Bechmat said the shootdown is not surprising, and he estimates the Houthis operate a system based partly on advanced Iranian systems. According to him, the likely scenario is that a concealed observation post detected the aircraft using a thermal camera and transmitted the information to a hidden launcher.

Bechmat raised the possibility that the missile received semi-active radar guidance, while the aircraft detected the threat and attempted evasive maneuvers by releasing chaff and executing a sharp turn. Based on the duration of the maneuver, he estimates the missile was fired from a range of approximately 15 to 30 kilometers.

According to him, the advantage of the Houthi method is not the ability to counter every sortie, but the ability to remain concealed, wait for an opportunity, and attempt to surprise even an advanced aircraft. He notes that a similar threat is familiar to Israeli aircraft operating in Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, which is why armies need to be alert about concealed air defense systems.
