Trump: "If I'd run, we would have won"

White House sources point to Iran war as factor in Republican losses; president says he's ready to work with Democrats

Trump against the backdrop of the House of Representatives

US President Donald Trump responded Wednesday for the first time to the midterm election results, in which the Republican Party suffered significant losses and, according to television network projections, lost control of the House of Representatives.

In a statement, Trump addressed the fact that his name did not appear on the ballot, claiming his participation in the race would have led to a different outcome.

"I wasn't on the ballot, and if I had been — we would have won in a landslide," the president wrote, adding: "Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Alongside his remarks, Trump signaled his willingness to cooperate with the Democrats, who are expected to hold the majority in the House.

In an interview with the New York Times, he said: "We'll work with the Democrats, and we, you know, look forward to cooperating with them. We'll probably find some kind of arrangement."

White House searches for culprits: Did the Iran war hurt Republicans?

Parallel to the president's response, reports are emerging of tensions in his circle following the election results.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, sources in the White House and Republican allies believe the war with Iran contributed to the party's losses.

According to some of the sources who spoke with the paper, ending the campaign several months earlier could have significantly changed the election outcome.
