Tucker Carlson Algebra Controversy Sparks Antisemitism Debate

A segment on Tucker Carlson's show in which he and a guest dismissed algebra as fake has drawn accusations of antisemitism, with critics pointing less to the mathematics than to the language surrounding it.

The episode, released Monday, September 7, featured Jess Elofson, an artist, potter and welder who lives on a farm in South Dakota. The two spoke for about two hours about art, beauty and politics before the conversation turned to mathematics.

Elofson said he had been unable to pass college algebra because he could not understand why letters were being put into numbers, and that his teachers lacked intelligence. He said he had never encountered anyone in his life who used algebra, and that he had built a wood-fired kiln, calculating the structural integrity of a catenary arch, without needing any of it. Carlson asked him directly why algebra puts letters into numbers. Elofson replied that it was done to mess with you. The two described algebra as fake math for people in the matrix, and concluded that taking it seriously was something done by, in Elofson's phrase, good little goy slaves. World Israel News reported that Carlson called the remark amazing.

Critics have focused on the surrounding material rather than the algebra itself. Elofson also told Carlson that finite math, which teaches how much interest a borrower pays over the life of a loan, had been hidden from students, and said he cut up his credit cards after a week of the class. Roughly two minutes before the algebra exchange, the two discussed Rumpelstiltskin, which Elofson called a perfect allegory for the present moment, describing a creature that produces wealth from nothing, wants to take your children, and rages when named. Taken together, commentators argued, the segment assembles a familiar claim about hidden control over money and knowledge.

The clips spread quickly. Some viewers initially assumed the exchange was a joke, and said they realized only as it continued that it was not.

For Carlson, the reaction follows a pattern established since he left Fox News in 2023 and began distributing his own program. He has drawn criticism repeatedly over the past two years for interviews and comments touching on Jews and Israel, including his conversation with Darryl Cooper and his engagement with Nick Fuentes. The algebra segment would carry little weight on its own. It is drawing attention because of what it sits alongside.

Some coverage has framed the segment as Carlson blaming Israel for algebra. Israel was not mentioned in the exchange as reported.
