Syria-Turkey Tensions

Turkish Media Attacks Israel Over Syria Strike

Israel confirmed striking the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria, near the Turkish border. Turkish outlets responded with aggressive coverage, while Netanyahu's office defended the operation as necessary to prevent Turkish military deployment.

Turkish Media Launches Fierce Campaign Against Israel After Syria Strike Acknowledgment

Turkish media outlets have unleashed a wave of hostile coverage following Israel's official confirmation that it struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria, located close to the Turkish border. Major television networks, newspapers, and news websites in Ankara and Istanbul adopted an aggressive editorial line, rejecting Israel's justifications for the operation.

During a live broadcast, a Turkish national security expert expressed intense anger and issued a combative challenge to Israel: "If the Israelis have courage, let's fight."

Leading Turkish newspapers reflected the escalating tensions in their front-page coverage. The daily "Turkiye" ran the headline "Serious Provocation from Israel," while "TAKVIM" published a sharper attack, claiming "The Zionists' problem is Turkey."

In Ankara's television studios, analysts attempted to decode the timing of both the Israeli operation and its public acknowledgment. Commentators asserted confidently that the goal was to sabotage coordination efforts and the restoration of relations between Ankara and Damascus, driven by Israeli concerns about Turkish troops establishing a presence near its border.

The analysts also referenced recent remarks by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in an interview with Al Jazeera, in which he declared: "We talk about peace, but if there is aggression – we will not shy away from war and we will not run from it."

In response, Prime Minister Netanyahu's office confirmed details of the strike yesterday and explained the operational and political rationale behind the decision. An official statement released by the office said: "Israel and Syria agreed to maintain the status quo on security matters, which Syria was about to violate by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at an air force base near Aleppo."

The statement continued: "Israel warned Syria repeatedly that such a deployment would constitute a threat to its security, but Syria chose to ignore this. Israel will not tolerate threats to its security, and welcomes a return to the status quo."

According to reports, the strikes targeted runways and hangars used for aircraft parking at the military airfield, shortly after a Turkish military delegation visited the site as part of efforts to rehabilitate the base.

Meanwhile, Tom Barrack, the U.S. special envoy for Syria and U.S. ambassador to Turkey, told Reuters that Turkey received no advance warning of the Israeli strikes. According to him, after Turkish forces detected the aircraft moving north toward their territory, they "could reasonably have prepared their own response." He added, "Fortunately, level-headed people managed to prevent the situation from deteriorating further."
