Holland's rail network descended into chaos as disruptions at multiple points forced the shutdown of train service in Zwolle, Deventer, and Amersfoort. Rail infrastructure operator ProRail reported that objects had been deliberately placed on the tracks at several locations, triggering safety systems that detected the rails as occupied and automatically halted train traffic. Authorities have opened an investigation into suspected sabotage.
The timing has drawn particular attention. The disruptions occurred on the day of the annual state budget presentation in The Hague, a major date on the Dutch political calendar when thousands travel to the capital for traditional ceremonies attended by the royal family.
