Close Call at Border

Boris Johnson Escapes Russian Drone Strike

Russian drone hit locomotive just minutes after former British PM and European security advisers passed through same route near Polish border

A Russian drone struck a train locomotive in the Yahodyn area of Ukraine, approximately two kilometers from the Polish border. The attack occurred shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European national security advisers, including Britain's Jonathan Powell, had passed through the same route on a different train returning from a conference in Kyiv.

Ukrainian authorities confirmed no casualties resulted from the incident, as all passengers had been evacuated from the area roughly 15 minutes before impact. Ukraine's state railway company noted that the diplomatic train had departed the station earlier than scheduled due to timetable changes prompted by ongoing threats, raising the possibility that the diplomatic train was the intended target of the strike.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus, who was on another train at Yahodyn station during the attack, described the incident as a frightening event. In an interview with The New York Times, Petraeus stated: "This is an act of a barbaric leader in every sense of the word who is trying to terrorize the citizens of Ukraine."

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who also attended the Kyiv conference, recounted how passengers on his train received instructions to prepare for evacuation after the train stopped. Bildt added: "After several minutes we were told that the area was clear and that we could continue," confirming that the train safely reached the Dorohusk border station in Poland.

Boris Johnson addressed the incident on his X account, writing: "I don't know what twisted logic motivated Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning." Johnson added that this represents the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainian civilians experience daily, and urged allied nations to urgently provide Kyiv with the necessary air defense systems.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha characterized the border-area strikes as a stage where Putin's terror is knocking directly on the doors of the European Union and NATO, calling for additional sanctions on Moscow. Sybiha emphasized: "Putin needs to understand that his barbarism will be met with decisive action that will raise the cost of war for him to an unbearable level. This is the only way to stop him."

In response to the developments, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting and warned that the escalation in Russian actions is becoming reality and they are approaching the border. Meanwhile, European Union Foreign Affairs chief Kaja Kallas accused Russia of attempting to intimidate Western nations, and made clear that the West must act in the opposite manner, demonstrating presence alongside Ukraine and showing no fear.

The European officials were in Ukraine participating in the Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference held in Kyiv. The incident joins a series of intensifying Russian attacks against railway infrastructure, terminals and border crossing platforms in Ukraine, which have caused casualties and severe damage to the railway network that has served as the country's main transportation artery since 2022.
