Air Defense Systems Deployed Around Trump’s Mar-a-Lago

NORAD confirms ground-based air defense systems were deployed near Mar-a-Lago at the Secret Service’s request, as airspace violations near the estate continue.

The U.S. military has deployed short-range air defense systems around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. They add a ground-based layer to the security already surrounding the president’s private club.

NORAD and U.S. Northern Command confirmed the deployment and said it was carried out at the request of the Secret Service. The commands declined to give operational details, citing security considerations. They have not said whether a specific threat prompted the move.

Local station WPTV identified the equipment as Avenger short-range air defense systems. The Humvee-mounted Avenger fires Stinger missiles and is built to take down low-flying aircraft, helicopters and drones. On Monday, WPTV spotted two of the systems on a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway outside Mar-a-Lago. More equipment has been seen near Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The Secret Service said it continues to operate in a “heightened threat environment.” It confirmed that Northern Command is providing counter-drone equipment to support its protective operations. The agency did not name specific weapons systems.

Former Navy fighter pilot Matthew Buckley told local media that drones, especially swarms, are a greater concern than small planes. He said protecting the president requires several layers of defense with backups for each.

The deployment follows repeated airspace violations near the estate. Fighter jets have intercepted more than 60 aircraft near Mar-a-Lago since Trump returned to office in January 2025. Most recently, on Oct. 24, an F-16 performed a “headbutt” maneuver to get the attention of a civilian pilot who had entered restricted airspace. The pilot made contact and left the area without incident.

A permanent no-fly zone already covers a 1-nautical-mile radius around Mar-a-Lago, up to 2,000 feet, whether or not Trump is there. The FAA is also proposing to replace the current temporary flight restrictions with a permanent Special Flight Rules Area.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Octavio Perez, a defense intelligence expert, told NBC6 he believes the timing may be linked to the G20 summit coming to Miami. He also pointed to the risk that a lone attacker or sleeper cell could act in response to developments involving Israel’s election or a new strike on Iran. Officials have offered no explanation for the timing.

An FAA VIP movement notice covering Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 indicates Trump may be spending the weekend in Palm Beach.

The new measures come eight months after Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed man who breached the north gate of Mar-a-Lago in February.

The military has not said how long the systems will remain in place or how much the deployment costs.
