Preparing for extended confrontation

US sends Patriot battery to Israel from Texas

Washington thickens Israel's air-defense umbrella and warns Gulf states to brace for imminent military confrontation with Iran • Preparations follow midterm elections

Patriot missile battery

The United States is transferring an additional Patriot air-defense battery from a base in Texas directly to Israel. The move, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, is part of a broader American preparation for the possibility of a short, intense military campaign against Iran, most likely after the US midterm elections in early November.

The new Patriot system is meant to thicken Israel's air-defense envelope. It will join the existing layers, Arrow, David's Sling and Iron Dome, and help counter possible barrages of ballistic missiles from Iran or its proxies. According to the reports, the transfer is based on flight-tracking data and American sources familiar with the deployment.

At the same time, the US military is taking additional steps: evacuating forces from vulnerable bases, American troops are being moved from installations considered exposed to Iranian or Iranian-backed militia attacks in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. The goal: to limit possible casualties in the event of escalation.

Replenishing stockpiles and surging force, ammunition inventories are being refreshed, bombers and fighter jets are being readied, and an additional carrier strike group together with a Marine expeditionary unit are expected to join next month the roughly 20 American warships already operating in the region. As Kikar HaShabbat reported, the US military has completed a massive rearmament process in recent weeks, replacing thousands of missiles used in previous strikes on Iranian sites or in intercepting attacks, and streaming in advanced munitions that have left it more prepared than ever.

Messages to the Gulf: Get ready

Washington has sent direct messages to Arab states in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to prepare for the possibility of imminent military confrontation. The messages were delivered through both diplomatic and military channels. Two diplomats involved in the conversations said that officials in the US diplomatic and security establishment advised governments in the region to take precautions against attacks by Iran and its proxies across the region.

At the same time, the United States has already recently sent additional Patriot batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect sensitive energy facilities. The emerging objective, according to sources familiar with the details, is to land a blow that will severely damage Iran's military capabilities, and thereby force it back to negotiations from a position of weakness.

President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision on whether to authorize another military operation against the Iranian regime, though he has hinted repeatedly that further strikes may be on the table after election day on November 3. As we reported, the US military has developed comprehensive strike plans against the Islamic Republic, including possible use of the GBU-43/B bomb, known by its menacing nickname "the Mother of All Bombs."

In the past, force movements of this kind served mainly as a deterrent tool. This time it appears to be genuine operational preparation: evacuating vulnerable bases, thickening defenses in Israel, warnings to Gulf states and concentrating firepower. The moves make clear that the United States does not intend to leave Israel alone in a possible campaign against Tehran, and that it is building a broad defensive and logistical umbrella that will enable offensive freedom of action.

The Middle East is once again on the brink of escalation. The Patriot battery arriving from Texas is only the tip of the iceberg of a far broader preparation.
