Italy Demands Israel Free Arrested Flotilla Citizens Immediately

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a sharp rebuke to Israel following the IDF's overnight interception of the Global Sumud flotilla, demanding the immediate release of Italian citizens detained during the operation in international waters near Crete.

The Italian government convened an emergency consultation Thursday morning, with Meloni presiding over a meeting that included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, and Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano. The hastily arranged session underscored Rome's alarm at the detention of its nationals.

In an official statement released from the Prime Minister's office, the Italian government stated: "The Government of Italy condemns the seizure of the Global Sumud flotilla vessels, which occurred last night in international waters off the coast of Greece, and calls on the Government of Israel to immediately release all Italians detained illegally, to fully respect international law, and to ensure the physical safety of the passengers."

The diplomatic crisis emerged after Israeli Navy Shayetet 13 commandos intercepted the flotilla vessels hundreds of nautical miles from Gaza. The convoy, comprising approximately 58 boats carrying hundreds of activists, claimed to be delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza but was exposed when Israeli boarding teams discovered condoms and recreational drugs rather than essential medical supplies.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening as the flotilla, which had departed from Barcelona earlier this month and made a stop in Sicily, continued its journey across the Mediterranean. Israeli officials characterized the mission as a provocative political stunt designed to generate international pressure and potentially provoke confrontation with the Israeli Navy.

Humanitarian Commitment Reaffirmed

Despite the confrontation, Rome emphasized its continued commitment to providing legitimate humanitarian assistance to Gaza. The government statement clarified that "the Government reiterates its commitment to continue providing humanitarian aid to Gaza within the framework of our cooperation and in accordance with international law."

The timing of the diplomatic clash is particularly sensitive given recent tensions between Italy and Israel. Just weeks ago, a Trump administration envoy proposed replacing Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup, a suggestion reportedly aimed at easing friction between Trump and Meloni following disagreements linked to the Iran conflict.

The flotilla operation itself has been marred by controversy beyond the interception. The initiative has faced internal turmoil, with allegations of sexual misconduct against one of its primary organizers and the sudden departure of high-profile participant Greta Thunberg amid the scandal.

Israeli intelligence had estimated that approximately 1,000 activists from dozens of countries were aboard the convoy. The IDF chose to intercept the vessels far from Israeli shores to minimize security risks, given the flotilla's size and what military officials described as its provocative intent.

The Italian government's forceful response marks a significant diplomatic challenge for Israel, particularly as Rome has historically maintained relatively strong ties with Jerusalem.
