In an extraordinary and deeply human encounter, the bereaved father of IDF Corporal Ohad Ya'ari, killed by an accidental discharge from his commander's weapon during operations in Lebanon, met this week with the father of the commander currently under arrest, embraced him warmly, and called for the commander's immediate release from custody and return to combat.
David Ya'ari, Ohad's father, told Ynet he intends to appear personally at Sunday's military court hearing to ask the judge to free the commander without delay. "The greatest punishment he received was before any legal proceeding," Yaari said. "He will carry the weight of his conscience for the rest of his life. There is no place for criminal proceedings against him, only for operational and technological lessons to be drawn."
The incident occurred in Lebanon when Corporal Yaari was struck by a round discharged from his commander's weapon. Both sides have characterized it as a serious operational malfunction involving a new weapon system that had recently entered IDF service, occurring against the backdrop of prolonged operational stress, high alert, and intense fighting on the northern front.
Military police opened an investigation and the commander was detained on suspicion of criminal involvement, a move that drew fierce opposition from the fallen soldier's own father.
The commander's father, identified only as A., described his son's profound psychological torment. The commander, who has fought continuously since October 7th across the most intense sectors of Gaza and Lebanon, losing friends and commanding officers along the way, is consumed by guilt and feels he failed in his most sacred duty: protecting his soldiers, whom he regarded as his own children.
He asked his father to convey his deepest apologies to the bereaved family, and has expressed fear that the army will abandon him, asking to return as soon as possible to his comrades still fighting in Lebanon.
