A 32-year-old woman who survived more than a day trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Colombia has died from complications related to her ordeal, turning what had been celebrated as a miraculous rescue into tragedy.
Daniela Largo Sánchez was buried under debris in the city of Pereira following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. Rescue teams worked for hours to locate survivors in the wreckage, eventually finding Largo Sánchez alive. But reaching her proved extraordinarily difficult due to her position within the collapsed structure.
According to reports, rescuers spent an additional ten hours carefully extracting her after first making contact. Video footage from the scene captured the moment she was finally brought out from the ruins, with rescue workers and bystanders breaking into applause and emotional cheers. After approximately 36 hours beneath the rubble, she had been freed alive.
Following her extraction, Largo Sánchez was transported to San Jorge University Hospital in Pereira in serious condition. For several days, her story stood out as one of the most remarkable survival accounts from the Colombian disaster. However, after days in intensive care, her condition deteriorated. She ultimately succumbed to medical complications resulting from the extended period she spent trapped.
The rescue remains one of the most powerful documented moments from the earthquake, a testament to the determination of rescue workers who refused to give up until they brought her out alive, even as the outcome would later turn tragic.
