US President Donald Trump fielded questions from reporters in the Oval Office regarding Middle East security policy, discussing the expiration of a memorandum of understanding with Iran, naval blockade operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and military readiness. The remarks outline an increasingly aggressive posture toward Tehran as economic pressure mounts on the Iranian regime.
Addressing the situation in Iran, Trump rejected extending the diplomatic memorandum that expired today. When asked if Tehran wanted to reach a broader agreement, he stated, "Tehran wants to make a deal, but they are not going to make the kind of deal that I think is necessary."
He emphasized that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear capabilities, adding, "They must not have a nuclear weapon. And right now, after what we did previously with B-2 bombers, it will take them a long time to build one."
Regarding the strategic waterway, Trump advocated for formal US territorial control over the Strait of Hormuz. "I think it is a great idea. We control it through the blockade, and I like the idea of declaring it our territory," Trump said.
He described the internal state of Iran as deteriorating rapidly, stating, "Iran is in big trouble. They have 300 percent inflation, the country is in chaos."
Trump highlighted the economic impact of US naval operations in the region, noting that oil prices continue to drop due to maritime controls. "Thanks to the naval blockade we are extracting millions of barrels of oil a week. The strait is open, oil prices are dropping, and they will continue to drop, unless we decide to do something much more drastic than what we are doing now," he remarked.
The President addressed threats directed at other regional actors, including Oman, stating earlier that if the country obstructed US operations, "we will blow them to pieces," before adding in the Oval Office that US forces could "handle them easily."
He also claimed that secret communication channels exist with members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while asserting that if full scale fighting resumes in the region, "the US will lead it and Israel will support it."
Trump dismissed news reports alleging poor conditions and food shortages aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, calling them false coverage. "There is plenty of food on the Lincoln. It is a false report," Trump stated, noting that while the vessel has been deployed for an extended period, naval ships have previously remained at sea for longer durations without logistical issues.
Regarding military supplies, Trump rejected concerns over potential ammunitions shortages, claiming that current expenditures were minor. Turning to the situation in Gaza, Trump cautioned against Israeli military actions following reports that Hamas agreed to a 15 point deal, stating, "The Israelis better not attack, Hamas agreed to lay down its arms."
When asked about potential involvement in upcoming Israeli elections, Trump remarked, "I think it is most appropriate that I stay out of it, but I might endorse someone."
