Cambridge Prof. Dies Amid Plagiarism Probe

Jason Arday, 41, who became Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023, was found dead at his London home shortly after resigning over allegations of academic misconduct and questions about his credentials

Jason Arday, a former sociology of education professor at Cambridge University, was found dead at his home in the Battersea neighborhood of south London. He was 41 years old.

According to London's Metropolitan Police, officers responded to his residence on Friday after emergency services reported calls concerning an unresponsive individual. Arday was pronounced dead at the scene. Police described the death as "unexpected" but stated that at this stage there is no suspicion of criminal involvement. The case will be referred to the coroner for investigation.

Arday's death came shortly after he resigned from his position at Cambridge. His resignation followed the opening of an investigation into allegations of plagiarism in his academic work, as well as questions raised about details he had provided regarding his achievements, qualifications, and appointments throughout his career.

The university announced it had launched an inquiry after receiving new information concerning Arday's academic background and the process by which he was appointed. Cambridge stated that even after his resignation, the investigation would continue, and that its findings might inform a broader review of appointment procedures for senior academic positions at the institution.

Arday denied the plagiarism allegations against him. Liverpool John Moores University, where he completed his doctoral dissertation in 2015, had previously examined similar claims and determined that the issues involved were honest mistakes rather than literary theft. Arday himself acknowledged that errors had occurred in his work.

In his resignation letter, he wrote that the personal pressure accompanying the controversy had become too much to bear. However, he clarified that his decision to leave did not constitute an admission of the allegations against him, and described an extended period of public criticism and personal attacks.

Arday gained widespread public attention in 2023 when he became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge University's history. The controversy surrounding him sparked debate in Britain regarding academic standards, university appointment processes, and diversity policies at institutions of higher education.

Following his death, family members said they were devastated by the loss, describing him as an exceptional father, partner, brother, uncle, and son.
