The United States is bringing home the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln following an extended operational deployment in the Middle East, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The carrier will be replaced by the USS George H.W. Bush, in a rotation that underscores the significant burden the ongoing conflict with Iran places on American naval resources.
During more than 200 days in the combat zone, the Lincoln served as a cornerstone of U.S. military operations against Iran. Aircraft from the carrier flew more than 10,000 sorties, participating in American strikes and efforts to enforce a naval blockade against Iran.
