Elephant Conservation: Yossi's Record Size vs Wild Decline

Israel's Ramat Gan Safari celebrated an unusual milestone Tuesday as Yossi, the first elephant born at the facility, turned 52 years old. The birthday marks more than just longevity: Yossi holds the world record as the largest elephant in any zoo globally, weighing approximately 7 tons and standing over 3.8 meters tall.

His extraordinary size results from a combination of excellent family genetics and advanced age. Unlike most mammals, male elephants continue growing throughout nearly their entire lives—and at 52, Yossi exemplifies what that sustained growth can achieve.

The timing of Yossi's birthday carries special significance, falling just one day before International Elephant Day. This juxtaposition highlights a troubling contrast: while Yossi thrives in captivity, African elephants in the wild are actually becoming smaller.

One might expect nature to produce more giants like Yossi, but the opposite is happening. Illegal hunting drives this phenomenon—poachers consistently target the largest, oldest elephants with the most impressive tusks. When these individuals are killed before reproducing, and older animals systematically disappear, wild populations become dominated by younger, smaller elephants. The genetic potential for size remains, but fewer animals survive long enough to reach it.

Protected from poaching in his secure environment, Yossi demonstrates the full natural potential of African elephants. Over the decades, he has fathered 32 offspring—children and grandchildren now living in zoos worldwide, contributing to conservation efforts for African elephants, which the UN's International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies as "endangered."

Estimates suggest an African elephant is illegally killed approximately every 30 minutes for the ivory trade. Under these conditions, Yossi and his descendants play a particularly vital role in species preservation.

The Safari organized a private celebration for his 52nd birthday. Like all elephant calves, Yossi was born tuskless and weighing 70 kilograms. But he has grown continuously since, reaching his current estimated weight of 7 tons and earning the title of largest elephant in captivity anywhere in the world.
