Tupac Shakur Murder Trial Begins After Three Decades

Nearly three decades after one of music's most shocking killings, the trial in the death of rapper Tupac Shakur has begun in Las Vegas. Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, is charged with orchestrating the fatal shooting that occurred in September 1996 and sent shockwaves through the hip-hop world.

Davis, who has been in custody since 2023, faces charges of murder with a deadly weapon and intent to promote or assist gang activity. He has pleaded not guilty. The trial is expected to last approximately one month and has generated enormous interest, particularly because this marks the first indictment filed in a case that has captivated Shakur's fans and the entire hip-hop community for decades.

Prosecutors allege that while Davis did not pull the trigger himself, he planned the attack, authorized the shooting, and provided the weapon. According to authorities, Davis was inside the white Cadillac from which shots were fired at Shakur's vehicle.

The murder took place on the night of September 7-8, 1996. Shakur was seated in the passenger seat of a black BMW driven by Suge Knight, founder of Death Row Records. The two were leaving a boxing match where Mike Tyson had defeated Bruce Seldon and were heading to a nightclub where Shakur was scheduled to perform.

As the BMW stopped at a traffic light near the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled alongside and gunfire erupted toward the vehicle. Shakur was struck by multiple bullets and died from his injuries six days later, at just 25 years old. Knight sustained minor injuries.

For years, the case remained unsolved until Davis began speaking publicly about the incident and his position as a leader in the South Side Compton Crips gang. In 2019, he published a memoir, and later participated in interviews where he shared details about the night Shakur was killed. According to prosecutors, these statements helped revive the investigation.

The hip-hop world, which has weathered numerous conflicts and tensions over the years, now awaits to see whether the mystery that has haunted it for nearly three decades will finally be resolved. The trial is expected to be one of the most closely watched in American music industry history.
