8 PM Deadline: Hamas Vows to Deliver Hostage Body, But Is It Another Cruel Trick?
Hamas announces plans to return deceased Israeli hostage's body by 8 PM, following controversy over previous remains handover that sparked outrage among victims' families.

Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, announced today that it will hand over the body of a deceased Israeli hostage at 8:00 PM local time, following a recovery operation involving its specialized unit in the Gaza tunnel network.
The announcement comes amidst escalating fury from Israeli officials and hostage families regarding Hamas's pace and methods, which have been denounced as deliberate psychological warfare intended to sabotage the U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Shadow Unit Retrieves Remains
Sources indicate that militants from Al-Qassam’s secretive Shadow Unit, which is responsible for holding captives, were preparing to enter a tunnel to recover the body of a fallen Israeli. Hamas confirmed the handover would proceed at 8:00 PM as part of its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.
The use of the Shadow Unit in the recovery process highlights the operational control Hamas maintains over the tunnel infrastructure where many of the deceased hostages are believed to be located. Footage published by Qatar’s Al-Araby network previously showed Hamas members from the unit alongside Red Cross vehicles during search efforts in Gaza.
Fallout from Alleged Deception
The planned handover follows a period of intense controversy. Earlier today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the remains returned by Hamas the previous night were, in fact, partial remains of a hostage whose body had already been recovered and buried in November 2023: Ofir Tzarfati Z"L.
Tzarfati’s family issued a devastating statement, describing the repeated returns of his remains as a “despicable manipulation” and confirming they were being forced to “open Ofir’s grave and rebury our son for the third time.”
Israel has further accused Hamas of deliberately staging the discovery of Tzarfati’s remains in a video circulated to sow further distress and undermine the fragile truce.
Mediators Under Pressure
The ongoing dispute over the bodies, of which 13 reportedly remain in Gaza, threatens the stability of the ceasefire.
Families of the deceased hostages have demanded that the next phase of the truce be put on hold until Hamas fulfills its obligations. Conversely, Hamas has publicly accused Israel of obstructing the search efforts, claiming its forces are preventing the Red Cross and Palestinian teams from accessing certain areas of eastern Gaza City.
The recovery effort has been deemed a “massive challenge” by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), citing the vast destruction across the Strip. Despite the difficulties, the planned 8:00 PM handover is seen as a crucial test of Hamas's commitment to the terms of the agreement and a moment of agonizing anticipation for the families awaiting closure.
