Rafah Crossing Opens for Human Traffic in Both Directions

The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt has reopened for limited two-way traffic, according to Egyptian state-linked media, marking the first time it has operated since Israel closed it on February 28 at the start of its campaign against Iran. Israeli officials confirmed the reopening, saying the decision followed a new security assessment.

The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt has reopened for limited two-way traffic, according to Egyptian state-linked media, marking the first time it has operated since Israel closed it on February 28 at the start of its campaign against Iran.

Al-Qahera News reported that the crossing is now open “in both directions,” broadcasting footage of a small number of Palestinians preparing to return to Gaza from Egypt, including individuals who had been receiving medical treatment abroad. Ambulances were also seen on site to transport patients exiting the Strip.

Israeli officials confirmed the reopening, saying the decision followed a new security assessment. The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories stated that operations were resumed after reviewing conditions on the ground, while maintaining restrictions due to ongoing security concerns.

The move comes amid continued fighting in the region and follows reported pressure from the United States to facilitate humanitarian access.

The crossing had been expected to reopen a day earlier, though no official explanation was given for the delay.

Rafah has served as a critical gateway for humanitarian aid and medical evacuations throughout the conflict, and its reopening, even on a limited basis, is expected to ease some of the pressure on civilians in Gaza.
