Hezbollah Commanders: Yemen Lie Exposed

A coordinated disinformation campaign on Arab social media claimed senior Hezbollah operatives were killed in Yemen, abandoning Lebanon. Investigation reveals the truth: all five were eliminated by Israeli strikes in Dahieh and southern Lebanon.

An unprecedented information storm has erupted across Arab digital platforms in recent days. The narrative is clear and sharp: Hezbollah is showcasing images of senior officers and operatives who allegedly "died in Yemen." The visual and textual material circulating on social networks claims that "Israel is inside Hezbollah's territory, steps from their homes, but the 'leaders' compass' led them to fight Yemenis in service of Iran, instead of defending Lebanon."

The names cited in the campaign are well-known senior figures within the organization: Muhammad Surur, Haytham al-Tabatabai, Hassan Salami, Mahdi Ashmar, and Wassim Jabai. The story sounds sharp, critical, and hits a sensitive nerve in Lebanon, the catastrophic economic and security situation during wartime.

But investigation proves definitively: this is planned and coordinated fake news. The campaign is designed to strike Hezbollah from within, portraying it as an organization that abandons the Lebanese home for distant wars in service of Iran. In reality, all five were eliminated by Israel in targeted strikes in Lebanon.

The Yemen Connection: Unit 3800 and the Export of Military Expertise

To understand why this campaign works and how the manipulation was created, we need to separate historical facts from current political narrative. The connection to Yemen is not entirely fabricated, and that's precisely the problem.

Some of these senior operatives were indeed sent in the past by Hezbollah to train, develop, and assist the Houthi rebels' rocket and drone systems. They operated within Unit 3800, a special and important unit in Hezbollah's structure, responsible for supporting and directing the "axis of resistance" outside Lebanon: primarily in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, under direct Iranian guidance.

The fact that they served there in the past was exploited on Arab social networks to create a convenient and defamatory political narrative: "You're fighting in Yemen instead of defending Lebanon." But the deaths themselves, in practice, occurred much closer to home, at the hands of the Israeli Air Force.

Muhammad Surur (Abu Saleh) commanded Hezbollah's drone and air defense systems. Surur was a central figure in developing the organization's drone and UAV capabilities. He was indeed sent to Yemen in the past to train the Houthis in aerial systems. On September 26, 2024, he was eliminated in a targeted strike in Dahieh, Beirut.

Haytham Ali al-Tabatabai (Abu Ali) was one of the organization's most senior military commanders, with a high profile. He previously commanded the elite Radwan Unit and Unit 3800. Due to his deep involvement in Yemen, the United States once offered a multi-million-dollar reward for his capture. After the elimination of Hezbollah's top leadership in 2024, he was appointed chief of staff of Hezbollah's military wing. He was eliminated by Israel in Beirut in November 2025.

Hassan Salami commanded Hezbollah's Hajir sector. He was responsible for coordinating and managing rocket and anti-tank fire toward Israel. He was eliminated in a vehicle strike in southern Lebanon near Kafr Ruman in February 2024.

Mahdi Ashmar and Wassim Jabai were both field operatives and engineers in the organization's technological and operational systems. Both were killed at different times in Lebanon, as part of the exchanges of blows with Israel.

The interesting question is why this fake news works so well. The social media posts use a partial true fact, the fact that these commanders did serve in Yemen, to construct an entirely false story. In communication science, this type of manipulation is called a "chimera": a monster composed of real parts to give validity to the false part.

This combination is lethal because it's difficult to immediately refute for the average reader. When there's a kernel of truth, the story becomes more credible. The political goal is unambiguous: to level internal criticism at Hezbollah as an organization conducting wars for Iran in distant Arab countries, instead of defending Lebanon itself.
