Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Daughter Arrested in Columbia Campus Crackdown

Not just another campus arrest: Hollywood pedigree, antisemitic protest, and the politics of Palestine collide.

Ramona Sarsgaard, daughter of actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, was arrested during a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University earlier this week, as tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas war continue to play out on U.S. college campuses.

According to the New York Post, the 18-year-old Columbia University freshman received a desk appearance ticket for criminal trespass after participating in a demonstration organized by Columbia University Apartheid Divest. The protest took place Wednesday. Protesters saw fit to block access to Butler Library during the university's exam period and it led to the arrest of approximately 80 individuals.

Columbia has since suspended 65 of those arrested, barring them from campus facilities and exams. An additional 33 people, including students from other institutions and alumni, have reportedly been banned from campus. It is not yet known whether Sarsgaard is among those suspended or banned.

Sarsgaard, who does not maintain a public social media presence and has not commented publicly on the Israel-Hamas war, has drawn attention due to her family’s public profile. Her mother, Maggie Gyllenhaal, has previously spoken about her Jewish heritage, though it is unclear whether her children were raised in the faith.

Gyllenhaal starred in The Honorable Woman, a British drama series exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in which she portrayed a British-Israeli entrepreneur seeking to promote peace through business ventures. Peter Sarsgaard appeared in September 5, a dramatization of the 1972 Munich massacre of Israeli athletes.

In an interview with The Irish Times earlier this year, he commented on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying that what was true in 1971 is still true today, while noting that none of the cast or crew are Zionists so far as he knows.

Neither Gyllenhaal nor Sarsgaard have commented publicly on their daughter’s reported arrest.
