"Metallica's agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby"

Metallica: No political BS at our shows

James Hetfield tells tens of thousands in Las Vegas that Metallica's stage is for music and connection, not personal agendas, a pointed jab at artists who've turned concerts into political platforms

James Hetfield, frontman of the legendary metal band Metallica, came out over the weekend against the politicisation of music concerts. During a Metallica show in Las Vegas, Hetfield addressed tens of thousands in the crowd and made clear that for him, the stage is first and foremost for music and for connection between people, not for pushing personal agendas.

"If you don't live in Vegas, you probably came a long way to spend some time with Metallica," the singer told the excited fans. "And I just want to say: Metallica is not here, like some other artists, to influence you with their bullshit."

Hetfield went on to emphasise the role of music as an escape from daily reality: "We're here to forget all the nonsense that's out there. Metallica's agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!"

Though the singer refrained from naming specific artists or referring to a particular incident, his sharp jab comes at an especially turbulent time in the global music industry. Over the past year, leading musicians and artists have used their performances and the world's major stages to express pointed political and social positions, with an emphasis on various statements regarding Israel and the war in the Middle East.
