Beyond Torture
"Extraordinary Man": Piers Morgan Visibly Moved by Hostage Eli Sharabi's Survival Story | WATCH
Released hostage Eli Sharabi shared the horrifying details of his two year captivity and the crushing moment he learned his wife and daughters were murdered, prompting a rare display of emotion from British journalist Piers Morgan.
Released hostage Eli Sharabi was interviewed on the popular show Piers Morgan Uncensored last night, sharing his experience in captivity and the heartbreaking moment he discovered the murder of his wife and two daughters on October 7, 2023. The interview was hailed by the British journalist, who wrote on his X account, "A very moving interview with an extraordinary man."
The roughly 15-minute interview, which was Piers Morgan’s first with a released Israeli captive, began with Morgan asking Sharabi to describe his time in captivity. Sharabi detailed the relentless psychological torture he endured.
"There was daily humiliation. Our captors used psychological terror non-stop, violence from time to time, and poor hygienic conditions," Sharabi recounted. He revealed the inhumane treatment: "We showered once every six weeks with half a bucket of warm water, there was no soap, there was no toothpaste. Of course, the worst thing was the starvation. It was deliberate starvation. We ate one meal a day, a dry pita. Our captors ate five meals a day."
Morgan inquired if he ever feared he would never be released. "I always believed that one day I would be released," Sharabi replied. "I always thought optimistically. It helped me survive, keep my spirits up, and not sink into depression. I thought it was the best way to survive there."
The Moment of Shattering Reality
Sharabi’s motivation to endure the two years of captivity was rooted in a profound and ultimately tragic hope: he did not know the fate of his wife and two daughters. He explained that maintaining the belief that they were alive "helped me survive in captivity. It gave me the motivation to hold on because I knew that one day I would see them and kiss them again."
The devastating truth was revealed the moment he was transferred to the IDF at the border. "The moment I crossed over to the IDF at the border, I understood they were murdered." A social worker approached and told me my mother and sister were waiting for me," Sharabi explained. "I told her, 'Please bring me Liyan, Noya, and Yahel.' She said my mother and sister would tell me. Of course, that was the moment I realized the most horrible thing had happened to me, that they were murdered on October 7th. It was like a 5-kilogram hammer to my head. I cried. But then, when they tried to calm me down, I remembered where I get strength from, and it is always from my family. I went to see my mother and sister and hug them, and that's what happened."
A Moment of Levity
After Morgan expressed his gratitude and deep respect for Sharabi, the released captive surprised the British interviewer with a spontaneous gesture, presenting him with a red cap that read "Make Arsenal Great Again." Sharabi, himself a Manchester United fan, explained that a friend who supported Arsenal had given it to him. The two shared a laugh over Arsenal's status, and Morgan, who is a well-known Arsenal supporter, concluded the interview deeply impressed: "What an extraordinary man."
