Ex-Hostage Emily Damari Spotted at England World Cup Match in Powerful Image of Hope

Emily Damari, freed after 500+ days in Hamas captivity, was photographed cheering England at the 2026 World Cup, in a moment that moved thousands online.

She was held in a Hamas tunnel for over 500 days. On Saturday, she sat in the stands of a World Cup stadium, cheering on England.

Emily Damari, the dual Israeli-British citizen who was abducted from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7, 2023, was photographed at England's match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, looking composed, present, and free, a sight that moved thousands of people online who saw in her something they had been desperately hoping to see: a hostage, returned to life.

Israeli activist Ben Green shared a photo of Damari at the match with a simple caption that said everything: "Former hostage Emily Damari is at the England vs Panama World Cup match. So good to see former hostages living out their dreams after experiencing the Hamas hell in Gaza."

The image spread rapidly.

Damari spent more than 500 days in captivity under conditions that remain difficult to fully comprehend, torn from her home, her country, her life. She was among those released as part of a hostage deal, and since her freedom she has spoken publicly about what she endured and continued to advocate for the dozens who remain in Gaza, still waiting for the world to bring them home.

That she chose to spend a Saturday afternoon at a football match, surrounded by crowds, noise, and color, feels less like a small personal outing and more like a declaration. A woman who was kept in darkness, watching the light come back in.

England's campaign at the 2026 World Cup has drawn enormous attention, and for Damari, holding British citizenship alongside her Israeli identity, the match carries its own meaning. She wore it openly, sitting in the stands among tens of thousands of fans who had no idea that somewhere among them was someone for whom freedom itself is still new.
