Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signaled that he will not seek re-election when his current term ends in 2028, marking the beginning of the end for one of the most dominant political figures in Turkey’s modern history.

Speaking after the recent municipal elections, Erdogan, 70, declared that this would be the final vote held under his leadership, adding, “I have no intention of being re-elected or running for president again.”

Erdogan, who has served as president since 2014 and previously held office as prime minister for a decade, used the moment to advocate for sweeping constitutional change. Criticizing Turkey’s current charter, adopted during a military coup era, he emphasized the need for a new, civilian-led framework: “Turkey can no longer move forward with a constitution written by putschists. We need a constitution proposed by civilians, not coup plotters.”

His remarks, quoted by the Anadolu news agency, underline his call to reshape Turkey’s political future before his departure from power.
