The IDF Home Front Command is updating the warning system on its mobile and smart TV applications in an effort to make emergency alerts clearer and easier to understand, it announced Tuesday.

The update is intended to help users quickly identify the type of emergency, the level of threat and the action they are required to take. The Home Front Command said the changes were made after implementing lessons from recent military campaigns.

According to the announcement, the new system is designed to deliver life-saving instructions to civilians in a simple, clear and visual format during emergencies.

The updated alert system will use a color-coded model, with each alert including a dedicated icon, sound and instruction based on the type and urgency of the threat.

A yellow alert will indicate a possible incoming threat and will be accompanied by a dedicated sound. It will serve as an early warning rather than a notice of immediate danger. Instructions could include moving closer to a protected space.

A red alert will be accompanied by a siren and will indicate an imminent threat requiring immediate action. Instructions could include entering the nearest protected space.

A green alert will indicate that the event has ended and the danger has passed. It will also be accompanied by a dedicated sound.

The Home Front Command is also updating lock screen alerts and mobile notifications. The new notifications are intended to provide faster and more accessible information about the type of event and the required action, without requiring users to open the application.

Another change will distinguish between alerts for a user’s current location and alerts for areas of interest selected inside the app.

The Home Front Command app allows users to select up to 10 areas of interest across Israel, so they can receive alerts for locations where relatives, workplaces or other important sites are located. Under the update, users will be able to immediately tell whether an alert applies to their current location or to one of those selected areas.

The changes are meant to reduce confusion during emergencies and help residents respond more quickly when warnings are issued.
