IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir issued a stark ultimatum to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Sunday, warning that the military faces an unprecedented structural failure if immediate legislative action is not taken regarding enlistment and service duration.
According to reports from Walla and i24News, Lt. Gen. Zamir demanded the urgent passage of three critical measures:
- The Draft Law: A permanent framework for Haredi enlistment.
- Service Extension: Increasing mandatory service from 30 months back to 36 months.
- Budget Increase: A significant expansion of the defense budget to meet current security threats.
The "January 2027" Deadline
The Chief of Staff warned that the military is approaching a breaking point. "In January 2027, due to the shortening of service to 30 months, thousands more combat soldiers will be cut from the IDF," Zamir cautioned. "The reserve army will collapse in on itself."
Haredi Leadership: "We Have Failed"
The military's demand comes as senior officials within the Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) parties admit behind closed doors that the Draft Law is unlikely to pass during the current Knesset term.
In a candid conversation with Kikar HaShabbat, a leader of one of the Haredi factions confessed: "We have failed in our central mission in the Knesset." Another senior Haredi official noted that the current draft of the law is unacceptable to their base, particularly following rigorous objections from the Knesset's legal advisors. "Passing a law without any legal backing could cause more harm than good," the official added.
With the Knesset's summer session marking the final window for a legislative solution, the gridlock between military necessity and political reality has reached what many are calling "H-Hour" for the IDF's future manpower.
