Addressing the state Memorial Day ceremony at the Western Wall, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir delivered a forceful message regarding the military’s ongoing operations and the requirements for national endurance. Zamir stated that the military has taken decisive action across all arenas, including new security arrangements on the borders of Gaza and Syria, and ongoing efforts to create a new reality in Lebanon to restore security for northern communities. He specifically highlighted the unprecedented campaign against the Iranian regime, noting that for years, Tehran has worked to develop a plan for the destruction of the State of Israel. The Chief of Staff affirmed that the military did not remain silent, striking with power to thwart these plans and standing guard to ensure that Iran will never realize its ambitions.

Zamir connected the current efforts of the Israel Defense Forces to the long, ancient history of the Jewish people, drawing a line from biblical figures and the heroism of Judah the Maccabee to the soldiers serving today. He cited the example of the tank crew led by Captain Daniel Peretz, which included Itai Chen, Tomer Leibowitz, and Matan Angrist, describing them as the latest in a long chain of defenders who did not hesitate to act when facing danger. Zamir noted that while he knows no true comfort can be offered to the bereaved families, the military remains steadfastly committed to supporting them, continuing the search for missing personnel, and aiding those who carry the physical and emotional wounds of the war.

The Chief of Staff used the platform to address a significant internal challenge, pointing to the need for a deep partnership among all parts of the nation in the mission of security and bearing the burden of national service. In a message widely seen as directed at segments of society that do not participate in military conscription, Zamir argued that this partnership, built through learning and change, is a necessary condition for Israel’s military strength and existence. He concluded by stating that the military will forever walk girded with a sword to ensure a vision of prosperity, growth, and peace for the children and grandchildren of Israel, vowing that the IDF will remain on watch to guarantee the nation’s eternity.
