A drone display illuminated New York Harbor on Wednesday evening, with 2,977 individual lights ascending into the sky—each one representing a person who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The illuminated drones rose directly from the water to form full-scale representations of the Twin Towers, just two days before the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Family members of 9/11 victims, survivors, and first responders participated in creating the tribute, including New York Fire Department members Brenda Berkman and Tim Brown, Terry Strada from the 9/11 Families United organization, and Jim Smith and Genevieve Saylor.
Organizers intended the event to serve as a moment of collective remembrance and unity for participants and observers alike. However, when the tower formations dissolved back into scattered lights, some witnesses found the visual difficult to watch. For certain attendees, the display felt less like a memorial tribute and more like witnessing a replay of the traumatic event itself, a reaction that sparked considerable debate in New York City.
