Days before Rosh Hashanah, reserve battalion 8104 commanders speak from deep inside Gaza, dismissing claims of operational restrictions and describing how their troops remain motivated after 500 cumulative days of combat
Days before Rosh Hashanah, while the entire country prepared for the High Holidays, a military correspondent descended deep into the Gaza Strip to meet with commanders and fighters of reserve battalion 8104 from Division 99.
The terrain here, in the heart of the Strip, is tense and silent, but the spirit of the fighters, even after more than 500 cumulative days of combat, remains strong, determined and highly motivated.
One claim frequently heard in public discourse is that "the soldiers' hands are tied" in the field. The battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel A., seeks to completely refute these assertions. In an exclusive conversation, he clarifies that operational activity is conducted systematically, professionally and fully, without any unnecessary limitations.
"We operate here with precision and complete freedom of action," the battalion commander explains. Approximately 250 kilometers separate the position where we stand from the "Yellow Line," which sits on the Tantzur axis (Salah al-Din Road). This entire area has been cleared and is completely clean of terrorists, suspicious structures and combat equipment. "When we identify even a slight attempt by the enemy to re-establish itself," Lt. Col. A. emphasizes, "we eliminate it in the bud, decisively and without any interference."
Standing beside the battalion commander is one of the company commanders in the battalion, Major A. It's hard not to be impressed by the total commitment of his fighters, who arrive for extended reserve service, rotation after rotation.
"Even after 500 days of combat, the fighters keep coming and don't rest for a moment," Major A. says with pride. "Throughout this entire period, and not now either, we've had no shortage in positions — the fighters simply show up. Our job as commanders is to navigate sensitively and carefully between the personal and family needs of the fighters and the demanding combat requirements in the field."
Standing on the ridge of hills deep inside the Strip and looking eastward, reality unfolds before your eyes in the clearest possible way. Beyond the fence, within touching distance, the houses of the city of Netivot and the Gaza envelope communities are clearly visible.
"When you stand here and look east toward home, you understand everything," summarizes the battalion commander, Lt. Col. A. "We understand very well the strategic and tremendous importance of our presence here, deep inside the Gaza Strip. This is the real defense of the residents and of all our homes."
