The Army Marches on Its Stomach: IDF Expands Kosher and Specialized Food Standards
The IDF Rabbinate has launched a professional "Mehadrin and Special Populations" department, ensuring that every soldier from the strictly observant to those with dietary restrictions receives elite culinary support.

In a strategic move coordinated by the Military Rabbinate and the Personnel Directorate (Aka), the IDF officially established the "Mehadrin and Special Populations" department within its Kashrut branch.
The new department is designed to provide high-level, tailored nutritional solutions for all service members. Beyond the strictest "Mehadrin" kosher certifications for religious soldiers, the branch is staffed by experts dedicated to addressing the needs of soldiers with celiac disease, severe allergies, and vegan lifestyles.
Ensuring Operational Readiness Through Nutrition
Military officials emphasized that providing food that aligns with a soldier’s values and physical needs is a fundamental condition for meaningful service. By improving oversight of food production for maneuvering forces and operational units in the field, the IDF ensures that no soldier is forced to compromise their health or religious standards during combat.
"The establishment of this department brings a real message of progress to the IDF," said Col. Rabbi Chaim Weissberg, Head of the Rabbinate Department. "Out of a systemic understanding of the unique needs of the Haredi public serving in the IDF, we are committed to ensuring every soldier receives a response tailored to their values."
Removing Barriers Amid the Draft Debate
The launch of this professional department comes at a pivotal moment in Israeli society, as the ongoing national debate surrounding the Haredi Draft Law continues to dominate the Isreli media headlines.
The Military Rabbinate’s efforts to guarantee "Mehadrin" standards at the highest level represent a significant step by the IDF to accommodate Haredi recruits. By professionalizing kosher infrastructure and removing logistical obstacles, the military is signaling its readiness to integrate the ultra-Orthodox community, ensuring that religious lifestyle requirements are never a barrier to serving the nation.
