The Israel Defense Forces is set to implement a significant change in how it provides mehadrin-standard kosher food to haredi soldiers, with the new system expected to launch within approximately two weeks. The military will gradually discontinue its reliance on sealed, pre-packaged meal trays and instead expand access to freshly prepared, varied meals meeting mehadrin kashrut standards as part of the regular food service operations on bases.
The shift represents a fundamental change in how haredi troops receive their meals. Rather than a separate solution based primarily on sealed containers, mehadrin-certified food will be integrated into standard base dining facilities while maintaining the stringent kashrut requirements and lifestyle considerations of the haredi community.
To support this transition, the Military Rabbinate's kashrut division has established a new department dedicated to policy-making and halachic supervision for food intended for soldiers who observe mehadrin standards. This unit will set dedicated protocols and standards for base kitchens to ensure that prepared food meets the established kashrut requirements.
The reform was developed through joint staff work involving the Chief of Staff's advisor on haredi affairs, the Technology and Logistics Directorate, and the Military Rabbinate. The planning process included examining existing services and gathering feedback about gaps identified by soldiers and commanders, with the goal of adapting food services to haredi soldiers' needs.
Colonel Avinoam Emuna, the Chief of Staff's advisor on haredi affairs, stated: "We are not satisfied with simply enabling a haredi soldier to serve in the IDF while maintaining his way of life. Our responsibility is to ensure he receives the conditions that will allow him to serve well, respectfully, and for the long term."
The initiative is expected to be implemented gradually over the coming weeks and joins a series of steps the IDF is taking to adapt service conditions to the needs of haredi soldiers.
