Ex-Muslim Writer Rebuts Claims of Israeli "Occupation" Plans in Lebanon
After influencer Mario Nawfal accused Israel of planning a "three-zone occupation" of Lebanon, former Muslim resident Dan Burmawi stepped in to set the record straight.

Amid the ongoing conflict in the north, a significant verbal confrontation has unfolded on social media between a prominent anti-Israel influencer and a former Muslim who spent over a decade living in Lebanon.
The clash began when Mario Nawfal, a well-known influencer and commentator, posted a series of allegations on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Israel's true intention is the permanent occupation of Lebanese territory. Citing purported diplomatic leaks from the Lebanese outlet Al-Modon, Nawfal detailed a alleged Israeli plan to divide Lebanon into three distinct zones:
Nawfal argued that these terms effectively hold Lebanon "hostage" and claimed that the U.S. State Department’s rhetoric, distinguishing between war with Hezbollah and war with Lebanon, is incompatible with such a plan.
The Rebuttal: "Israel Never Initiated Aggression"
Stepping up to defend Israel was Dan Burmawi, a Jordanian-born writer and former Muslim who lived in Lebanon for 15 years before moving to the United States. Drawing on his deep personal experience living in the region, Burmawi challenged the "occupier" narrative.
"I lived in Lebanon for 15 years," Burmawi wrote. "During that time, I visited the Israeli-Lebanese border more times than I can remember."
In his response, Burmawi highlighted the stark contrast he witnessed over the years:
The Root of the Conflict
Burmawi described the gradual transformation of the border, noting that Israel only built walls and reinforced defenses in response to harassment and security threats.
"Israel never initiated aggression against us. It was forced to build barriers and walls, and when necessary, to enter and deal with those who know only death," Burmawi stated.
He concluded by accusing Nawfal of framing the situation inaccurately: "Mario frames his post as if Israel wants to occupy and rule Lebanon, when in fact Israel is doing what the spineless Lebanese government has failed to do for decades. Israel wants to live in peace... It is the neighbors, driven by a 'divine mandate' to erase Israel, who continue to draw out its harshest response."
