Israel Moves to Halt Arrests of Ultra-Orthodox Draft Evaders

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is fast-tracking emergency legislation to shield full-time Torah students from military arrest warrants. The political maneuver aims to appease ultra-Orthodox parties and secure their support in delaying national elections

7,000 Haredi Vehicles Flood Israel's Highways in Historic Draft Protest

In a coordinated push, Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued urgent directives to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. They are demanding an immediate temporary order to freeze all criminal and enforcement proceedings against ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) yeshiva students who evade military service.

Under the proposed framework, criminal immunity would only apply to verified, full-time religious students under strict institutional oversight, while enforcement would theoretically continue for non-studying draft evaders.

Escalating Enlistment Crisis

The legislative push follows a landmark High Court ruling that stripped yeshivas of state funding and ordered the military to begin drafting Haredi men, who have historically enjoyed sweeping exemptions.

The subsequent rollout of military arrest warrants triggered mass fury within the ultra-Orthodox community. Last week, thousands of Haredi demonstrators blocked major highways across Israel, clashing with police and paralyzing nationwide traffic in protest of the draft orders.

Government officials argue that the current sweeping arrest campaigns have exacerbated societal rifts without actually boosting military enlistment numbers.

Political Survival Tactics

For foreign observers, this legislative scramble underscores the deep political leverage held by religious factions within Netanyahu's ruling coalition.

Fuchs explicitly noted that the crackdown has caused heavy backlash among the Haredi public, threatening coalition stability.

By advancing this protection bill, Netanyahu’s government is actively working to guarantee that ultra-Orthodox lawmakers remain aligned with the coalition, ensuring their vital votes to postpone early national elections to the latest possible date.
