Netanyahu May Override Primary Results

Senior Likud officials are pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure a Knesset slot for Avi Dichter, who lost his spot in overnight primaries, citing the party's need for security credentials

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing mounting pressure from senior Likud party members to guarantee a Knesset seat for Minister Avi Dichter, who failed to secure a realistic spot in the party's overnight primary elections.

According to a report by Anna Barsky in Maariv, expectations are growing within the party that Netanyahu will invoke an override mechanism available to him as party chairman to move Dichter into a safe position on the Likud list. The push comes amid changes to the party's security leadership following the departure of Yoav Gallant.

Senior Likud figures believe maintaining a prominent security figure like Dichter, a former director of the Shin Bet internal security service, in a winnable slot carries significant electoral importance.

The override mechanism allows the party chairman to promote a candidate who competed in the primaries to a higher position, using one of the reserved slots allocated to the chairman. Though petitions have been filed challenging the use of this provision, Likud's internal court has already approved the legality of such a move.
