Marking the Hebrew calendar anniversary of the devastating October 7, 2023, attacks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant address at the Mount Herzl military cemetery on Thursday, vowing that Israel’s campaign against terror will “continue with full force.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks came during the state memorial ceremony, two years after the initial Hamas-led massacre and amidst the protracted conflict in Gaza. His speech paid tribute to the victims of the initial attack and those who have fallen in the subsequent war.

A Chapter of Unprecedented Barbarity

Addressing the heavy toll paid for Israel’s existence, the premier stated that the list of victims’ names “bears witness to the heavy price bound to our fundamental right to be a free people in our land.”

Netanyahu characterized the events of October 7 as a historical low point, describing the day’s brutality:

“Despite October 7 being another chapter in the long war for our national existence, those events also stand among the peaks of barbarity known to humanity in the modern era.”

He recounted the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists:

“They beheaded, abducted, raped, tortured, and burned their victims, and even filmed their actions live, including their cries of joy.”

The Diplomacy of Documentation

The Prime Minister used his address to recall his recent efforts to showcase the horrific documentation of the attacks on the international stage.

He referred to his latest visit to the United States, where he had agreed to the framework for ending the Gaza war under US President Donald Trump. During that visit, he “insisted that the footage of the atrocities… be shown… be made available [to] world leaders and to the general public abroad.”

This move was a clear reference to his public diplomacy campaign at the United Nations General Assembly last month, where he wore a QR code on his lapel. Scanning the code directed viewers to the graphic evidence of the October 7 massacre.

Unity for War and Peace

Reiterating his core pledge, Netanyahu stated,

“our struggle against terror will continue with full force,” asserting that Israel “will not allow evil to raise its head. We will exact the full price from anyone who harms us.”

He also used the ceremony to commemorate the casualties from wider regional actions, specifically referencing “the terrible losses from all enemy actions during the war, including victims of the missiles Iran launched at Israeli cities” during the 12-day confrontation with Tehran in June.

Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of national cohesion moving forward, tying the memory of the fallen to the nation’s future aspirations.

“Above all, we need unity – unity in war, unity in peace,” Netanyahu insisted, adding that the memory of the victims “will not only turn to the past; it will accompany us in our actions to secure a good future, a safe future, to stand up to the challenges from our enemies and to widen the circle of peace with our neighbors.”
