The Senior Appointments Advisory Committee has narrowly approved the nomination of Major General Roman Gofman as the next Director of the Mossad. The decision, which paves the way for a five year term beginning June 2, was signed by the Prime Minister shortly after the committee’s vote. However, the appointment has ignited a firestorm within the defense establishment. The committee's chairman, retired Supreme Court Justice Asher Grunis, and the current Mossad chief, David Barnea, both vocally opposed Gofman, citing a "significant flaw in moral integrity" and "abuse of power" regarding a classified incident during Gofman's time as commander of the 210th Division.

The Almakeiss Affair and the Ethics Debate

The core of the opposition centers on the recruitment and abandonment of Uri Almakeiss, who was a 17 year old minor when he was allegedly utilized as a clandestine operative by Gofman’s division. Almakeiss, who ran a popular Telegram channel, was used to influence operations against Hezbollah and the Syrian army before being arrested by the Shin Bet and subjected to 44 days of intense interrogation and "physical pressure" in a state facility. It took 18 months of house arrest before Almakeiss was cleared of all charges, with it eventually emerging that the military had hidden evidence of his recruitment from the prosecution. Justice Grunis described the division's failure to provide accurate answers about the minor's operation as a "severe moral and ethical flaw."

Current Mossad head David Barnea was even more blunt in his testimony, stating that Gofman had bypassed the professional protocols of Unit 504 and "made his own law." Barnea warned the committee that a commander who utilizes such tactics is someone who "abuses his power, for certain." Despite these warnings, Gofman received full backing from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who described his service record as "magnificent" and saw the incident as a tactical error that should not overshadow his operational brilliance. Almakeiss himself has vowed to fight the appointment, warning that "someone who abandoned a 17 year old boy will also abandon Mossad agents." As Gofman prepares to take over the world’s most prestigious intelligence agency, the shadow of this ethical scandal threatens to follow him into the shadows.
