Israel-Gaza War, Palestinian Authority

The Palestinian Authority just resigned - here's why

The PA government resigned this morning paving the way for a transitional government that will attempt to establish an alternate government that will take control of Gaza after the war. And what do the Americans have to do with it?

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced his resignation and the dissolution of the PA government this morning (Monday) at the weekly cabinet meeting. This step was taken to prevent accusations of not helping Hamas.

Abbas accepted the resignation but the current government will continue to serve as a transitional government until another one is formed whose ultimate goal is to gain control over the Gaza Strip - as soon as the war comes to an end.

This move also stems from pressure from the United States, which has said quite a few times since the beginning of the war, that it wants the Palestinian Authority to rule Gaza following war - something that Israel is currently opposed to if far-reaching changes are not made in its agendas and charter - which it claims is no different to Hamas.

About two months ago, it was announced that despite Prime Minister Netanyahu's opposition, the Biden administration is already holding talks with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas regarding the integration of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza, and in particular the possibility of reactivating part of the PA's security forces in the Gaza Strip, as the nucleus of an initial security and policing force following the war.
