IDF fires colonel over Gaza comments

The IDF dismissed the reserve colonel

Lieutenant Colonel Hazi Nehama from the settlement of Ali was dismissed from reserve service after speaking out against the IDF's policy in the fighting in Gaza. Nehama was a co-author of the "Champions' Plan," which proposes a plan for decisive action and the return of captives through military pressure.

Colonel Hazi Nechama was dismissed from reserve service after publicly criticizing the IDF's activities in Gaza. The criticism was made while he was not in uniform and after Nechama had commanded many operations in Gaza.

Nechama was a partner, together with General Giora Eiland, in writing the "Champions' Plan," and it seems that it was one of the reasons for his suspension from reserves.

In recent weeks, several attempts have been made by various units to summon Nechama for reserve duty, but they were all rejected by an official in the General Staff who decided on his suspension from reserves.

In June, Nahama claimed that the IDF is achieving extraordinary results at the tactical level, but these achievements are not translating into a strategic victory. Nahama argued that the method of incursions employed by the IDF will not lead to the defeat of Hamas and will impose on the IDF repeated incursions into the same areas where it fights and where Hamas returns and recovers. Another issue on which Nechama criticized is Hamas's control over humanitarian aid—an action that brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the organization's coffers and allows it to recruit thousands more militants and pay salaries to current militants.

Additionally, he pointed out an increasing disconnect between the Chief of Staff level and the tactical level—a disconnect that is also reflected in a survey in which more than fifty percent of field commanders expressed a lack of confidence in the Chief of Staff's ability to continue leading the IDF to achieve the war's objectives. It seems that these criticisms, although made when Nechama was not in active reserve service, led officials in the General Staff to decide to suspend him from reserve service.

Nechama tried to contact the Chief of Staff and meet with him, but the meeting was postponed several times.

Nechama, 46 years old, married and a father of eight, a graduate of the Bnei David pre-military academy, served as a fighter in the Sayeret Matkal, as the commander of the Alexandroni Brigade, commander of the Menashe Brigade, deputy commander of the Gefen Battalion, and commander of the Givati Brigade.
